Find the Program That's Right for You

MSDH offers three PREP programs that can be implemented in schools, youth groups, and community settings. Each one is evidence-based, interactive, and designed to meet the needs of Mississippi youth.

Making Proud Choices!

For youth ages 11–18, this program builds confidence, sets goals, and encourages responsible decision-making about sexual health through engaging, interactive lessons.

Key Topics:

  • Abstinence and delaying sexual activity
  • Pregnancy and STI prevention
  • Refusal, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Understanding peer and partner pressure
  • Healthy relationships and decision-making
  • Accessing health services and resources

After completing the program, youth will:

  • Increase knowledge of HIV, STIs, and pregnancy prevention
  • Value safer sex, including abstinence
  • Strengthen skills in negotiation and condom use
  • Intend to practice safer sex if they become sexually active
  • Take pride in choosing responsible behaviors

Making Proud Choices! gives adolescents the tools to reduce their risk of HIV, STIs, and pregnancy by abstaining from sex or using condoms if they choose to be sexually active.

Reducing the Risk (RTR)

Designed for high school students ages 14–18, RTR prepares teens to navigate peer pressure, use protection responsibly, and plan for their futures.

Key Topics:

  • Abstinence and delaying sexual activity
  • Pregnancy and STI prevention
  • Refusal, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Understanding peer and partner pressure
  • Healthy relationships and decision-making
  • Accessing health services and resources

By completing RTR, students will:

  • Evaluate the risks and consequences of unprotected sex
  • Recognize abstinence and contraception as the only ways to avoid pregnancy and STIs
  • Understand the importance of factual sexual health information
  • Build effective communication skills to stay safe

Reducing the Risk (RTR) is a 16-session curriculum proven to help students delay sex or use protection consistently and correctly. The focus is on building the skills needed for risk assessment, communication, decision-making, planning, refusal strategies, and delay tactics.

Draw the Line/Respect the Line

For middle school students in grades 6–8, this program helps youth define personal boundaries, resist peer pressure, and build healthy, respectful relationships.

Key Topics:

  • Personal limits and values
  • Peer pressure and social influences
  • Communication and assertiveness
  • Healthy relationships and consent
  • Strategies for avoiding risky situations
  • Media literacy

The program is built on these principles:

  • Abstaining from sex is the healthiest choice for middle school students.
  • Youth can set and maintain personal limits—even when challenged.
  • Respecting others’ boundaries leads to healthier, more respectful relationships.
  • Condom use is essential protection for sexually active teens.

Draw the Line/Respect the Line is a 3-year evidence-based curriculum promoting abstinence and teaching boundary-setting, respect for others, and decision-making. Lessons include role play, group discussions, interactive games, videos, and guest speakers.

Educators & Parents

Support Youth.
Share the Power.

Whether you’re a parent, guardian, teacher, or mentor—your support matters.

Power 2 Protect equips youth with the tools to stay safe, healthy, and confident. But the guidance of parents, caregivers, and educators is just as necessary. You can make a difference by:

  • Learning more about the evidence-based curricula
  • Starting open, honest conversations with teens
  • Bringing Power 2 Protect programs to your school, classroom, or community

Together, we can give young people the knowledge and confidence they need to protect their health and future.

Parents Support Sex Education

Research shows Mississippi parents overwhelmingly support sex-related education in schools. A survey by the Center for Mississippi Health Policy found:

Abstinence-Plus Education: Facts vs. Fears

Worried sex ed might encourage risky behavior? (Click to expand)
TRUTH: Research shows it does not increase sexual activity—it reduces risky behaviors.
TRUTH: Modern methods are highly effective—far safer than no protection at all.
TRUTH: It teaches essential life skills—like healthy relationships, decision-making, and self-respect.
